What is a Web Site?
by Laurie E. Tenzer, da WebWahine
A web site is often confused with a home page.
Home Page, Web Page or Web Site: What's the Difference?
A home page or web page is the most basic presence on the world wide
web. It consists of one page. You will see do-it-yourself
home page assistants on many consumer-oriented services such as geocities.yahoo.com
or www.tripod.com.
These services generally allow you to set up a free home page (and sometimes
a full site) with a domain name such as: www.tripod.com/laurie. The
free space is available, generally in exchange for advertising. A home
page, is just that, one page. The home page serves a completely
different function on a full-blown web site.
A web site is a collection of pages pertaining to
a specific message, whether it be selling products, information about
your company or a discussion area . A home page is your visitor's
entry to your site. If you think of a web site as your house consisting
of the front door with many different rooms each serving a different function inside,
this is a web site.
A home page is like the front door to your home. Your front
door is reached by someone knowing your address. For example,
123 Elm Street is equivalent to www.yourcompany.com.
Just like the front door to your house, the home page allows visitors
an entry to take them to the other rooms in the house. Example:
You may navigate your visitors to the living room or your
Company Information page. Thus, from the home page, a visitor or
customer can navigate to all the other pages (or rooms) on the site.
